Exclusive: Cynthia Erivo Reveals How Elphaba Evolves in ‘Wicked for Good’ With Ariana Grande, ‘More Nostalgic and Centered’

Wicked: For Good is preparing to depart this week. Following the strong response to the first film, Wicked, the film was confirmed for the second part. Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marisa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum are reprising their roles in the sequel. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba Throop, has earned praise as well as an Oscar nomination for her role. Now, the 38-year-old has revealed how her character of Elphaba will change over the course of Wicked: For Good, sharing that she also grows as she grows up.

Speaking exclusively to Us about her return to the character, Cynthia Erivo explained how things change this time around. “Since the first film, Elphaba has been carrying the burden of being branded the Wicked Witch on her own, while still trying to do as much good as she can,” the British star said, talking about how Elphaba’s past experiences have developed her into this new version. Regarding the story changes for the character, he revealed, “She is isolated, she has made a den in the middle of the trees, where she can both hide and fly.”

The actress said, “When we meet her again, she is more stable and focused, consciously practicing her magic, studying The Grimmary and embracing her power.”

About the wicked: for the good

The story of Wicked: For Good begins five years after defeating the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, when Elphaba Throop is exiled from the land and named the Wicked Witch of the West. She is portrayed as a sadistic, vengeful and evil witch who wants to kill all living beings in Oz. Meanwhile, her friend Glinda Upland is made the face of the Wizard’s promotion. Shortly after becoming Captain of the Wizards Guard, her engagement to Fiyero Tigelaar is announced.

Meanwhile, Elphaba continues to fight for the animals’ rights and comes out to challenge the wizard whenever possible. As his struggle to uncover the magician’s lie continues, he comes face to face with Madame Morrible. His own younger half-sister, Nessarose Throop, stands up against him and chaos ensues.
