Exclusive: Colman Domingo recalls watching Jafar Jackson as Michael, ‘the alchemy between the actor and the real-life person’

Michael, the upcoming biographical drama film about the famous singer and dancer, Michael Jackson, features Jafar Jeremiah Jackson portraying his uncle’s character. A highly talked-about project, the project provides Starr’s fans another chance to see his legacy through a new lens that covers his life as a part of the Jackson 5, and leading up to his early solo career.

Colman Domingo shares his surprise at seeing Jafar become Michael

Ahead of its premiere this April, Colman Domingo, who plays Michael’s father Joe Jackson in the film, spoke exclusively to Pinkvilla about watching Jafar become the iconic star and what it felt like to be on the set where history was being made.

“The first time I saw Jafar, he was performing as Michael, and I had so many emotions,” recalled Domingo. “At first, I was just totally impressed. But then I also had a strange feeling of wanting to protect her and take care of her. I trusted the real feeling that drives Joe to be the way he is.”

Colman Domingo was amazed by the young man’s skill in not only transforming Michael as a character but also embodying the essence of the star; Eventually he plunged himself deeper and deeper. As a fellow actor in front of the camera, it was a phenomenon to behold. “Jafar is something special,” he said, adding that what really set him apart was, “What thrilled me was that Jafar didn’t just move like Michael, he paid attention to why Michael moved that way, what every gesture meant to Michael. It’s an alchemy between the actor and the real life person that I’ve rarely seen before.”

Apart from these two, other cast members of the film include Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Cru Valdi and Miles Teller. Check out the trailer below:

Michael is all set to release in theaters globally on April 24, 2026.
