Esha Deol opens up about comparisons with her mother Hema Malini after debut film, recalls body shaming; ‘A lot was said about my baby fat’

Remember when Esha Deol set the stage on fire with her electric dance performance in the popular track Dhoom Machale from Yash Raj Films’ 2004 film Dhoom? Her performance in the song is loved even today. Esha recently spoke about being compared to her mother, actress Hema Malini, after her debut film Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe. The Dhoom actress also revealed that she was body-shamed for her “baby fat” after the release of the 2002 film.

In a new interview with Zoom, Esha Deol opens up about how her views about working in showbiz changed after the release of her debut film Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe.

Esha, who also signed her debut film with Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, shared that she was quite excited to work in films. The young actress expressed that initially she had no pressure to carry forward her parents’ legacy. She started feeling the “pressure pump” after Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe received the audience’s response.

Esha said, “Then I felt they were comparing my first film with my mother, who has done 200 films. And they used to talk a lot about my baby fat. ‘Oh, she has a lot of baby fat’.” The actress admitted to having such cheeks at the age of 18, while adding that she looks “cute” in the kind of roles she does.

Esha Deol recalled that the young actress spoke to her mother Hema Malini when she was “overwhelmed” by the responses she received. The veteran star advised Esha to reconsider her decision to pursue the acting profession or become thick-skinned to survive in the industry.

The Dhoom star recalled discussing with her mother Hema about the effect these reviews are having on her. The Baghban actress asked Esha why she is a part of the film industry. The senior star warned that if his daughter Esha lets it affect her mental peace, she is in the “wrong profession”.

Hema Malini told Isha to focus on her goal and be aware of the fact that such comparisons will always happen. Hema also told her that if she can handle such comments, then the actress should continue working in Bollywood.

Esha Deol has Suniel Shetty’s series, Invisible Woman and an upcoming film, Main in the pipeline.
