The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday condemned the negligence in the treatment of Indian worker Satnam Singh, who died in northern Italy, and said his employer responsible for his medical care has been arrested.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called for humane treatment of the workers and said all possible assistance was being provided to Satnam Singh’s family.
“Their employer, who was supposed to provide them medical care, has been arrested and investigation is underway. We condemn such behaviour. We demand humane treatment of the workers. We are providing all possible help to their family,” Jaiswal said during a weekly briefing.
India has also raised the issue with Italy and called for immediate action against those responsible for his death.
Muktesh Pardeshi, Secretary (Consular Passport & Visa Division and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs, raised the matter with Luigi Maria Vignali, Director General for Migration Policies and Italians Abroad, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy.
Muktesh Pardeshi further said that the Indian Embassy in Italy is in touch with the family of Satnam Singh for consular assistance and to bring the body to India.
The Indian Embassy in Italy posted on X on June 26, “@SecretaryCPVOIA Muktesh Pardeshi conveyed to Italian DG @LuigiVignali our deep concern regarding the death of Satnam Singh and asked for prompt action against those responsible. The Embassy is in touch with Satnam Singh’s family for consular assistance and transportation of the body @MEAIndia.”
According to the Fly CGIL trade union, Indian national Satnam Singh died after being left on the road following an accident.
This accident happened while he was working in the field, and his hand got cut.
According to the Flai CGIL trade union, instead of receiving assistance from the employer, “Singh was dumped like a garbage bag near his home.”
Earlier last week, the embassy had said that it was in touch with local authorities and efforts were being made to contact the family and provide them consular assistance.
