Speaking about Nolan’s filmmaking style, Damon said, “He’s very meticulous and I joke about it but I don’t mind. We approach the work the same way. We want to move forward. He creates tremendous momentum around the camera and that whole department. I remember interstellar There was a sequence where we were on this ice planet where I was trapped and my habitat exploded.”
He recalled convincing Nolan to let him be part of a practical explosion sequence rather than using the safer option.
He said, “I asked Chris to stay at an angle and tie me into the explosion because I love doing real practical effects like this. We took this shot and staged it, so I’m coming at this thing. I move forward and then, as the camera turns, this thing explodes. I accept it and I keep moving forward. And apparently we achieved it in one take.”
Damon shared that while the crew celebrated the successful shot, Nolan had already moved on to the next shot.
“It’s going well. Everyone is celebrating and Chris is already moving. He says, ‘We’re here now.’ He is already going to prepare the next shot. Later, we were all staying at the same little hikers’ motel and I mentioned it to him. He said, ‘Yes, it was absolutely fine. But if we had stayed to celebrate, we would have been congratulating ourselves for the next hour and a half. We wouldn’t have done anything. “I knew we’d get back here and I could tell everyone good job after we finished shooting,” Damon said.
The actor said that moment perfectly summed up Nolan’s work ethic.
Damon said, “So I like that dynamic and it means he doesn’t waste a lot of time holding your hand and telling you how great you are. He just wants to get on with it.”
