The Indian pantry is as versatile as you can imagine. From a wide variety of spices with distinct flavours and aromas to a variety of oils for different cooking purposes, there is no dearth of options in store. In this article, we will talk about one such versatile cooking ingredient that adds a strong pungent and earthy aroma to the dishes we indulge in. Yes, we are talking about mustard oil. A staple in almost every Indian kitchen, mustard oil has a high smoke point, making it ideal for curries, especially for non-vegetarians. It is also considered healthy. But did you know that this beloved desi ingredient does not have much of a reputation in the United States? You read that right. It is completely banned there for cooking purposes. Wondering why? Let us share some insights with you.
Why is mustard oil banned in the United States?
According to Ashwin Bhadree, CEO and food safety expert at Equinox Labs, mustard oil is not approved in the US because it is believed to contain high levels of erucic acid. For those who don’t know, high levels of erucic acid are linked to cardiovascular problems and negative effects on the lungs and skin. These are considered to be some of the major reasons behind the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision.

Is the erucic acid in mustard really bad for you?
Ashwin Bhadre further explains that small amounts of erucic acid are safe, but high levels over a long period of time can prove harmful. Erucic acid, found in excessive amounts in mustard oil, is a monounsaturated fatty acid that animal studies have found to be harmful to cardiovascular health when consumed in large quantities. While these studies involved doses higher than normal human consumption, the possibility of similar effects in humans cannot be completely ruled out, leading to regulatory caution. “However, the studies do not present a clear picture of the effects of erucic acid on human health,” says the food expert.
Should we not consume mustard oil?
Food expert Krish Ashok says it is not wise to blindly believe a few scientific studies. This is because of the quality of the studies and their economic incentives, which can play a big role. And this is why you will find Indian grocery stores in the United States selling bottles of mustard oil labeled “For external use only.” However, he says many Indians buy these bottles of oil and use them in their Desi recipes.
It all started with a study done on rats in the 1970s. But what we often fail to understand is that “rats have a fundamentally different metabolism,” he says. That’s why it’s important to be careful in your food choices and enjoy your meals without any doubts.
