The first trailer of Digger sees actor Tom Cruise in an eccentric new avatar as oil baron Digger Rockwell. The dark comedy places him at the center of a disaster of his own making as he tries to prevent the fallout.

Actor Tom Cruise literally had to dig deep for his latest starring role, as seen in the trailer for his dark comedy miner Was released on 13 July. The film presents Cruise as an eccentric and largely unrecognizable incarnation of Digger Rockwell.

Described as a “comedy of devastating proportions”, the Warner Bros. film is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first English-language feature film. Evil spirit. Cruise plays an oil businessman described as “the most powerful man in the world” whose company may have sparked an ecological disaster that could even provoke nuclear war.

In the two-minute, 38-second trailer, Cruise’s Digger Rockwell is shown with a thick Southern accent, a pot-belly and thinning white hair in an untidy comb-over. As stated in the logline, Digger “sets out on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashes destroys everything.”

Actor John Goodman plays an ailing American President who prays to Digger to cure the crisis that has befallen him. The cast also includes Sandra Huller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D’Arcy.

Cruz, in an interview with Diversity Regarding the black comedy, Cruise shared that the role pushed him in a completely new direction under the guidance of the two-time Academy Award-winning director.
