Denmark is increasing its military appearance in Arctic and North Atlantic regions, allocating an additional 14.6 billion Danish crown ($ 2.05 billion) to increase security. The move comes when Denmark seeks to hand over the demands of US President Donald Trump to the control of Greenland, which is a semi-late area with significant mineral resources.
The perception of the United States of Greenland has been a topic of discussion for months, but recent developments suggest that the administration of President Trump is more serious about the proposal, which was initially thought.
Trump’s interest in Greenland has its strategic significance for national security. This island is rich in important minerals for technology and defense, including rare earth elements used in mobile phones, electric vehicles and weapons. With the dominance over China in the global rare earth market, Greenland’s reserves have become increasingly important to the US.
According to Denmark Defense Minister Trolls Lund Paleson, “Arctic and North Atlantic have serious challenges about security and defense.” This statement outlines the importance of strengthening Denmark’s military capabilities in the region.
The Danish government in collaboration with the governments of Greenland and Faro Islands has agreed to purchase three Arctic Navy ships, two long distance drones and satellites to improve monitoring. The purpose of these measures is to increase the defense capabilities of Denmark.
Currently, Denmark’s capabilities are four -aged inspection ships, a challenger surveillance aircraft and 12 dog sled patrolling, already cumbersome to monitor an area of France four times.
Although Denmark is responsible for the protection and defense of Greenland, the island later has a security black hole due to lack of military capabilities.
Greenland has become an important player in the region, with its strategic location and natural resources. As Vivian Motzfelt, a member of the Greenland government, said, “Greenland is facing a changing security scenario.” The purpose of increased military expenses is to resolve these challenges and ensure the safety of the region.
Additionally, the Danish government will provide training to young people in Greenland “allows them to take responsibility for preparations to achieve important skills”.
Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederricasen emphasized the importance of European unity in addressing the challenges faced by the region. “Europe is facing a serious situation. With war on the continent and change in geopolitical reality. In such moments, unity is important,” he said.
The move to strengthen the military appearance of Denmark in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions is an important step in addressing the developed security scenario.
