David Dhawan Exclusive: Filmmaker reveals why he never worked with Shah Rukh Khan: ‘I think at one time we…’

Director David Dhawan is all set to return to the big screen with a new romantic comedy ‘Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, starring his son Varun Dhawan in the lead role. Ahead of the film’s release on May 22, 2026, the filmmaker was roped in for an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla.

During the conversation, the veteran director addressed whether they had ever discussed a collaboration Shahrukh KhanConsidering that he has worked with stars like Salman Khan and Govinda.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, david dhawan Said, “Aisi baat nahi hai (It’s not like that). I think at one time we were planning to do something together. But I was always busy. I always had two pictures on the floor. So, it was very difficult for you to know. But there was definitely a time.”

The filmmaker said, “But I never thought that I would work with this actor. Just like I did with Govinda, I did with Salman, Sanjay…that was the calculation.”

(But it never happened that I would work only with a specific actor. As I worked with Govinda, Salman and Sanjay (Dutt), it worked out that way.)

youth is love is an upcoming romantic comedy-drama starring Varun Dhawan in the lead role. The first look of the film was released recently, showing an interesting “double trouble” love story. In the video, two children with different mothers discuss how their father has the same name and birthday, which makes them wonder if they are talking about the same person.

Along with Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in the co-lead roles, the film also stars Mouni Roy, Rohit Saraf, Jimmy Shergill, Chunky Pandey, Manish Paul, Rajesh Kumar and others in lead roles. This film will be released in theaters on 22 May 2026.

Previously, David Dhawan directed Coolie No. 1 (2020) starring Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan. It was a remake of his own 1995 film Coolie No. 1, which was itself a remake of the 1993 Tamil film Sinna Mappalai.
