Being a good host means taking care of all your guests, right? Well, one Redditor felt awkward at a BBQ hosted by his former friends. Sharing her experience, the 37-year-old said that it was the first time she was invited by ‘ex-boyfriend’s friends’ to join them for pre-drinks/BBQ. Before continuing, her boyfriend casually mentioned, “Her friend sent a message and said the host feels bad because they’re having a barbeque and there might not be enough food for everyone, so if “If we see food lying around, don’t feel bad about it.”

At first, the Redditor thought it was cool and “assumed they already ate and we were just joining in after that.” But when they arrived, things changed. It immediately became clear that no one had touched the food! Of the 12 invited guests, only eight sat down for dinner while the other four hung around. He recalled, “When the meal time came, 8 of them sat around a well-kept table and started eating without making eye contact with us, while we stood outside the table talking I thought it was very strange, didn’t I? It was strange because we were actually starving!”

The story does not end here. The Redditor shared that when the meal was done, the host got up and said “Guys, please help yourself!” To the leftovers. The woman found this strange and when her ex-husband went and brought some food on a plate and said “Come eat”, she shared that “she couldn’t bring herself to do that. I don’t even know these people.” And it was very uncomfortable. I politely said, no, thanks! And my ex got so upset by this reaction that we actually broke up. Went. ).”

She added, “They basically said we would just eat together at the street festival, so I was upset that they put me in that situation and then blamed me for deciding not to eat and get snacks on the street. Were you angry?”

Feeling shocked and confused, the Redditor, who is from Canada, wondered, “Is this culturally normal behavior for some people? I live in Canada, and I never eat in front of a guest in my home.” Can’t eat or feed them but is this normal behavior for some people? Was I rude or wrong for doing this? Or was he being mad and rude to me for declining the food? Made me feel like a person?”

The post went viral on Reddit with over 13K upvotes and 1.5K comments.

One comment read, “No, this is so weird. Especially with guests being singled out to only have leftovers while the ‘first’ crew got their choice?? I don’t know anyone who Will do that.”

Another said, “I’m with you. I don’t eat until everyone else at my house has made their plates and I always make sure there’s enough food.”

A third wrote, “This sounds like a mess. Why would you invite people to a barbecue you can’t feed?”

Another chimed in, “What kind of culture would eating in front of others be anyway??? So weird and rude, I would have just walked away if I saw them all sitting down to eat in front of you guys.”
