Broccoli sandwich causes malignant botulism outbreak in Italy: What is this disease?

The outbreak of a tragic botulism in southern Italy claimed the life of a 52 -year -old artist and composer Luigi de Sarno, when he consumed a broccoli and sandwich from a food truck in Diyamte, Koseenza. Nine others, including two teenagers and several family members, were admitted to the hospital, two in critical condition.
Authorities discovered contamination to the protected broccoli in the oil used in sandwiches. These jars are now remembered nationwide, and the food truck in question has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Since most of the Italy’s hospitals do not stock Botulism antitoxine, Italian Health Ministry raised serums from the poison control center in Pavia. Military aircraft were rapidly used to distribute antitoxine to hospitals, including Annunjita Hospital, where the victims were admitted.
Understand botulism
Botulism is a rare but life-threatening disease caused by neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. These toxins target the nervous system, causing symptoms such as blurred vision, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing or speaking, muscle paralysis and respiratory failure.
