Shortly after commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, French President Emmanuel Macron will host US President Joe Biden for a state visit on June 8, featuring a pompous parade as well as talks on trade, Israel and Ukraine.

The two men, who enjoy a warm relationship despite past tensions over a submarine deal with Australia, will attend a reception at the iconic Arc de Triomphe with their wives and parade down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees before meeting on policy issues and then attending a dinner.

Mr. Biden will host Mr. Macron for a state visit at the White House in 2022.

“France is our oldest and deepest ally. And this will be an important opportunity to reaffirm that alliance and look to the future and what we can achieve together,” US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters earlier this week.

Mr. Sullivan said the talks between the two will cover Russia’s war with Ukraine, Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, and policy issues ranging from climate change to artificial intelligence and supply chains.

White House spokesman John Kirby said the two countries will announce plans to work together on maritime law enforcement and the US Coast Guard and the French Navy will discuss increasing cooperation.

Mr Biden and Mr Macron are also expected to discuss strengthening NATO, and both have pledged their countries’ support for Ukraine, though they have not yet agreed on a plan to use frozen Russian assets to help Kiev. A US Treasury official said on Tuesday that the United States and its G7 partners were making progress on this.

Mr Biden met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris on Friday, apologising for months of delays by the US Congress in approving the latest aid package, and Zelensky addressed France’s National Assembly.

During a speech at the American Cemetery in Normandy (Spain) on Thursday, marking the anniversary of the Allied assault against Nazi German occupiers on French beaches in World War II, Biden called on Western powers to stay the course with Ukraine.

Mr Macron and Mr Biden will also discuss the situation in the Middle East.

Mr Biden has been a staunch supporter of Israel, which is pursuing Hamas after it invaded the country in October, but thousands of Palestinian deaths have embittered Biden’s left-wing political base on Israel, hurting him in his race against Republican Donald Trump for re-election in November.

Beyond Ukraine, trade issues between the two sides of the Atlantic are also likely to loom large.

The US Inflation Reduction Act, which Biden plans to sign into law in August 2022, has angered European officials; they see it as a protectionist move that drives away investment from EU companies.

Mr Macron said during his state visit to Washington in 2022 that the package of subsidies could “fragment the West” and undermine European post-Covid recovery, at a time when Washington is seeking allies against China and both sides confront Russia.

However, he and his European allies have secured few concessions from Washington since then, and French officials say their aim in the trip is still to try to “resynchronise” the US and EU economic agendas.
