Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approached filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a biopic on legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan after the success of the film. stalwart Franchise. During a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Sarma confirmed that he had reached Dhar to discuss the ambitious project. Explaining why he wanted Dhar to direct the project, the Chief Minister said a large-scale Hindi film could present the extraordinary story of Lachit Borphukan to audiences across the world.

He said, “I think if our government can make a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his bravery recognized globally. And, it will be a special achievement for us.”

Sarma said his initial conversations with the filmmaker have been positive and Dhar is expected to visit Assam in August to continue discussions and explore the creative vision of the project.

However, the Chief Minister clarified that the government is committed to making the film, no matter who directs it.

He said, “If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The aim is to ensure that a grand biopic is made on Lachit Borphukan.”

The proposed biopic is part of a larger effort by the Assam government to bring the state’s historical heroes to the big screen. In its 2026-27 budget presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

Who was Lachit Borphukan?

Lachit Borphukan is considered one of the greatest military commanders in Assamese history and remains an icon of bravery, leadership and patriotism. As the commander of the forces of the Ahom Kingdom, he is best remembered for leading his forces to victory over the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671 and stopping the Mughal expansion into Assam.

Despite suffering serious illness during the campaign, Lachit took command of the battlefield and inspired his troops to fight. His courage, determination and unwavering sense of duty have made him one of the most famous historical figures of Assam. His legacy is honored every year through Lachit Diwas, while his contribution to India’s military history is recognized across the country.
