Armed US woman taken into custody after standoff at FBI building in Seattle
The woman, whose identity was not immediately released, walked into a publicly accessible area and turned the gun on herself, an FBI statement said.
A woman was taken into custody with a handgun after an hours-long standoff at the FBI building in Seattle on Wednesday, authorities said.
According to FBI spokesman Steve Berndt, the woman walked into a publicly accessible area where people have to wait to enter the lobby.
“He had turned the gun on himself,” the Seattle Police Department said in an emailed statement. The hostage negotiation team eventually convinced him to put the gun at his feet and surrender.
No one was taken hostage and there were no injuries, officials said.
The woman’s identity was not immediately revealed.
“We are continuing to investigate his motives and charges have not yet been filed,” the FBI said in an emailed statement.
The FBI has reported an increase in the number of threats against bureau personnel and facilities in recent years. In 2022 a man armed with an AR-15 rifle and a nail gun tried to break into the FBI’s Cincinnati field office and was killed a few hours later after a standoff with officers.
And in August, a man broke through a barricade at the FBI office in Atlanta and then tried to chase an FBI employee on foot into a secure parking lot.
