AR Rahman issues warning over ‘derogatory post’ about separation from Saira Banu
In an open legal warning issued to “all abusers”, singer AR Rahman has given 24 hours to remove objectionable content targeting him and his family following the news of his separation with Saira Banu.
Music composer AR Rahman on Saturday shared a letter, threatening to sue those speculating about the reason for his separation with Saira Banu. The 57-year-old shared a three-page notice to those trying to defame him and his family by making ‘objectionable’ claims after announcing the news of their separation on Tuesday, November 19.
The globally renowned singer’s legal team gave “detractors” 24 hours to remove the objectionable material made against him and his family. A part of the notice addressed to the creators of such posts reads, “My client informs those spreading hate and sharing offensive content to remove the objectionable content within the next one hour and a maximum time period of 24 hours, they Would be advised to file.” Appropriate criminal defamation case under section 356 of the Indian Code of Justice, 2023 and in such situation, the offenders may be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, with or without fine, as the court may determine. Under section 356 (2) of the said Act.”

Several reports linking the news of Rahman’s separation to that of his bassist Mohini Dey surfaced online. Dey, who has toured with Rahman for years, shared a statement announcing their divorce on Wednesday, November 20. While many on social media linked the two announcements, Rahman and Saira’s legal representative quickly dismissed any connection between the two separations.
Saira’s lawyer Vandana Shah said, “There is no relation. Saira and Mr Rehman took this decision on their own.” Republic TVHe also told that there was no discussion between Rehman and Saira regarding financial matters.
Later, in an exclusive interview with India Today DigitalShah expressed his disappointment over the rumors of the reason behind the singer’s separation. He addressed and dismissed the speculations regarding Rahman’s bassist status.
“If another person also announces their divorce, will people start linking them too? There are many social people who are going through divorce at the same time, but that doesn’t mean they have an affair. This is ridiculous and should be treated with contempt. I’ve never seen this level of nonsense.”
Rehman and Saira married in 1995 and are the parents of three children, Khatija, Rahima and Ameen.
