Apple is reportedly preparing to release an innovative addition to the smart home market: an AI-powered wall-mounted tablet. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new device will act as a smart command center, designed to control devices, manage video calls, and intuitively navigate apps through AI-powered interactions . Apple’s long-awaited move into the smart home display segment could debut as early as March, aiming to provide consumers with a versatile and intuitive hub for home automation.
Apple’s new device, code-named “J490”, is expected to feature the company’s latest AI platform, Apple Intelligence, which combines Siri’s capabilities with advanced, hands-free navigation. Gurman reports that CEO Tim Cook has prioritized the development of this product, investing engineering and design resources to help Apple compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub, which currently Smart home displays lead the market. Apple’s tablet will likely stand out by integrating features unique to its ecosystem, which will attract consumers who already rely on Apple’s ecosystem for their everyday tech needs.
The design is compact – similar to a small iPad – and features a six-inch screen, internal speakers, a camera, and a thick frame. It’s designed to fit into any home setup, with mounts that allow it to hang on walls or sit on countertops. Users can control it by talking to Siri or tapping, a combination of its touch interface, the Apple Watch’s software design, and the iPhone’s standby mode. The device will also serve as an interface for Apple’s HomeKit, providing seamless control over compatible smart home devices like lights, thermostats, security systems, and even door locks.
Beyond smart home control, the Wall tablet will include a range of pre-installed apps, offering music streaming, calendar access and news updates. It will also support FaceTime, making it easy to use for video conferencing. And, in a unique twist, Apple plans to introduce a premium version of the device, which will potentially cost around $1,000, which may feature a robotic arm to adjust the screen angle, allowing video. There will be more convenience for activities like calls or cooking tutorials.
Apple’s entry-level models are expected to be priced competitively with similar devices, while higher-end options will appeal to those looking for a more versatile AI assistant in the home. This AI Wall tablet marks Apple’s first big step into the smart home display arena, giving the tech giant an exciting new way to connect with users directly in their living space.
