Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for his calm demeanor, focus on details and keeping the huge tech empire running smoothly. But in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Cook was surprised by a simple question about his iPhone habits. You would think that the boss of the company that makes the iPhone would know all its features, right? Turns out, not so much! Cook’s surprise made for a funny and light-hearted moment, showing that even Apple’s top guy can still learn something new about a device that millions of people use every day.

here’s what happened

During the interview, WSJ journalist Ben Cohen began asking Cook a series of pointed questions about his technology habits. Everything was going smoothly until Cohen asked a simple question: “What’s the best name for a group chat?”

Cook’s response? Confusion. The Apple CEO looked at Cohen as if he had asked him to recommend an Android phone! “Best—name?” Cook responded, clearly surprised. “I don’t take their names. Can you tell me your name? interesting. I can take that.’” It turns out, Cook had no idea that you could actually name iMessage group chats. Yes, Apple’s CEO was unaware of a basic feature of the iPhone that many of us use regularly.

Tim Cook didn’t know about that feature

For those who don’t know, iPhone users can change the name of a group chat in iMessage. This allows you to label chats with your friends or family like “The Squad” or “Family Banter” to keep things organized and add a little personality to your conversations. It’s a simple feature, but Cook had never used it. After learning about it, he decided to give it a try and later proudly informed Cohen that he had created a group chat with his college roommates named “Roommates.” It seems the king of minimalism has found a new use for iMessage, even if it took a journalist to point it out.

Tim Cook’s candid moment shows that even tech leaders can miss a feature or two, but hey, it’s never too late to learn, even if you’re the CEO of Apple!
