Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finalize divorce, settlement reached after 8 years
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a settlement, eight years after filing for divorce. Jolie’s lawyer gave her relief.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, her lawyer said Monday, bringing an apparent end to one of the longest and most controversial divorces in Hollywood history.
Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, confirmed to The Associated Press that the couple have reached a settlement. Who was the first to break the news of the agreement? People magazine.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simon said in a statement. “She and the children relinquished all assets they shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for her family. This is just part of a long-running process that began eight years ago. “To be honest, Angelina is tired, but she’s relieved that part of it is over.”
No court documents have been filed yet, and a judge will need to sign off on the agreement. An email sent late Monday to Pitt’s attorney seeking comment was not immediately responded to.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples for 12 years. The two Oscar winners have six children together.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 after a private jet flight through Europe, during which she said Pitt was abusive toward her and their children. In 2019 a judge declared them divorced and single, but property division and child custody needed to be settled separately.
The private judge the two hired to handle the case came down with a decision soon after, which included equal custody of their children, but Jolie petitioned to have him removed from the case due to an undisclosed conflict of interest. An appeals court agreed, the judge was removed, and the couple had to start over.
No details of the settlement were immediately revealed, and the couple’s use of a private judge — an increasingly common move among celebrities separating in recent years — has kept the proceedings largely secret. However, some details have emerged through a separate lawsuit filed by Pitt, in which he alleges that Jolie reneged on an agreement that she would sell him her half of the French winery that they both owned. It’s unclear how the divorce settlement will affect that lawsuit.
