Trigger warning: This article contains references to tragic death.

Lenny Simmons, brother of the late fitness guru Richard Simmons, spoke about Richard’s life. Richard, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 76, was known to be an energetic and health enthusiast. Not only that, Lenny revealed that Richard’s work was unfinished; before his untimely death, he was planning a comeback.

A revolution in bodybuilding and fitness

Richard Simmons’ road to stardom began in 1974 when Roughage and Anatomy Asylum opened. It was both an exercise studio as well as a health-food eatery, which were very unusual for one another. This marked the start of his successful fitness empire.

He has written five bestselling books, produced over fifty workout videos, conducted weight loss cruises, and taught classes at his Slimmons Studio in Beverly Hills. His appearances on talk shows and speeches have become very popular.

Intended return

Despite disappearing from the public eye since 2014, Richard’s passion for fitness has never waned. Lenny explained that Richard wanted to return to help a new generation struggling with weight problems.

“I think the way kids are growing up nowadays with their phones and things like that,” said Lenny, who put more emphasis on the issue by mentioning its effect on children “…there’s a need again, and I think that’s why he’s come out of retirement.” According to Richard, the flowers are blooming once again, and there’s another chance to inspire the youth about hard work as he did with previous generations.

Lenny hopes that some of Richard’s fitness videos will come back because they are still relevant today. Just before ending his statement he said, “At 76, I don’t know if he would have been able to continue doing what he did when he was 30.” Most importantly, he realized that he needed to be seen again by young people.

A lifetime legacy

Tom Estes, who was Richard’s publicist for many years, confirmed his death, saying, “The world has truly lost an angel.” Richard’s humility came through in his final PEOPLE interview, taken two days before his death. Estes says Richard didn’t consider himself a superstar or an icon.

“I’m a really shy person and a bit of an introvert. But when the curtain comes up, it’s a different story. I’m there to make people happy,” Richard told the interviewer, describing his personality.

Still, while performing, his goal was to make people happy. Richard also showed humility in his dealings with his fans. He concludes, “But the compliments I get from emails. I mean, today, probably, we’ll answer over 100 emails. And they’ll say, ‘I’m your No. 1 fan.’ And I just write back, and I say, you know, ‘Don’t say that because I’m a human being just like you. And I know you do good things, too.'”
