Due to this controversy, a debate has erupted in the film world. India Today Reached out to members of the actor community (Cine and TV Artistes Association) to understand how they view the controversy, what is the role of industry bodies in such conflicts, and whether more structured mechanisms are needed to resolve disagreements between actors and producers.
The Ranveer-Farhan issue has reignited a larger conversation about the authority of industry bodies and the lack of a formal, legally recognized dispute-resolution mechanism in Bollywood.
CINTAA raises questions about how the controversy was handled
Chairman Poonam Dhillon expressed disappointment at the way the issue was handled, saying she was surprised that the actor’s body was not taken into confidence before the matter escalated publicly.
He stressed that trade bodies exist to ensure representation for all stakeholders, and that CINTAA would have been willing to hear Ranveer Singh’s side and assist through its dispute resolution mechanism had the actor approached them.
However, Dhillon said she would refrain from taking sides as she did not have access to direct information from either side.
She said, “I am ignorant, so I can’t give any opinion because I don’t know his (Ranveer’s) point of view. I don’t know his point of view other than what has come out in the media.” He said any responsible intervention should be based on proper investigation and facts rather than media reports.
This is heartbreaking for the industry
Actor Vindu Dara Singh, who is also a member of the executive committee of CINTAA, described the controversy as ‘heartbreaking’, adding that controversies of this nature are unfortunate for an industry that works like a family. Reiterating that the association stands with the actors, he said that both Ranveer and Farhan are respectable individuals, and the matter should have been resolved through dialogue rather than a public confrontation.
He also said that there is a film like this don 3 It involves significant planning and investment, and any delay or disruption affects a large number of people involved in the project.
Also, Singh said that he found it difficult to believe that Ranveer would walk away from a major franchise without any solid reason, which shows that there were potential viewpoints from both sides that needed to be heard.
Responding to reports that Ranveer had questioned the authority of FWICE, Singh said the actor could have attended a meeting and presented his version of events.
He said that there must be some reasons behind Ranveer’s situation and all parties deserve a fair hearing. He said, “We will have to listen to that boy’s side in this matter also.”
One-size-fits-all solution doesn’t work in this industry
Addressing FWICE’s call for a framework to deal with actors pulling out of projects, Dhillon argued that there can never be a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, as every dispute comes with its own circumstances.
While acknowledging that both the producers and actors have legitimate concerns, he questioned the way the matter was handled. “The way it was handled was just not right,” he said.
The actor also raised concerns about the non-cooperation instructions and pointed out that such measures could have a cascading effect on hundreds of workers who depend on daily shoots for their livelihood.
According to Dhillon, many actors and technicians are already struggling financially, and the disruption in production has worsened their situation. Instead, he called for more communication between industry bodies and more ethical practices, especially when it comes to timely payment and fair treatment of workers.
Vindu Dara Singh, on the other hand, mentioned how the government needs to recognize the industry. He also mentioned how there should be limited unions and bodies that have the legal authority to take charge in such situations.
Singh said, “We are the biggest industry and are pumping so much money into the economy. What happened was sad, but we need a fair and legal system where such situations can be avoided. We are a family and loving people. And everyone here wants to work, and should be allowed to work.”
What is FWICE non-cooperation directive?
The controversy stems from FWICE’s recent press conference, where the organization had announced non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh over his alleged exit. don 3.
During the conversation, it was alleged that the actor did not respond to three communications sent by the film body and only got in touch after learning that FWICE was planning to address the issue publicly.
It was further stated that the matter is still unresolved and concerns were expressed that such incidents could set a bad precedent within the industry.
During the conference, it was also suggested that there remains room for negotiation on the alleged Rs 45 crore compensation being sought by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar. For now, the demand was that Ranveer meet the federation at the table.
Later, the federation also wrote to IMPPA (Indian Motion Picture Producers Association) and PGI (Producers Guild of India) to draw up a framework to protect producers in similar situations in future.
