Tamil actor Vikram, who recently called crimes against women in the country “abhorrent”, stressed that women should feel safe at all times and everywhere. He said it is up to men to respect women’s space and safety.

The 58-year-old actor’s comments came in the wake of the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and the Justice Hema Committee report on exploitation of women in Malayalam cinema.

During an interview with news agency ANI PTIThe ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ actor said, “All women need to feel safe. They should be able to walk the streets at 3 in the morning and feel that they can walk, go home, and nobody will do anything. Every man is there to protect them, to give them their space. What is happening is disgusting.”

The actor whose Tamil film ‘Thangalan’, The actor, who recently starred in ‘Dangal’, which hit theatres, said he often thinks about raising the issue of women’s safety in his films. “We are affected by whatever happens… I have always thought if I was creative, would I raise this issue more in my films? Would I do something?” he said.
