As the contestants began their red carpet walk in Washington Square Park, authorities intervened, issuing a dispersal order and fining the organizers $500 for holding an “unpermitted costume contest.”
Flyers for the contest, promising a $50 reward for the best lookalike, were circulated across New York in the days leading up to the event, generating significant social media buzz and thousands of RSVPs.
Ultimately, 21-year-old Staten Island resident Miles Mitchell was declared the winner after wearing a purple Willy Wonka outfit and distributing sweets to the crowd.
