Grover said that she met Haider through a mutual friend and he proposed to her within just 18 days. The couple eloped in 2000 because her mother did not approve of their interfaith relationship. According to Grover, he started noticing changes in her behavior only after marriage.
“He had schizophrenia. At the time, I didn’t really understand what schizophrenia meant. As I later learned after reading a lot about the condition, a person can appear completely normal on the outside while still struggling with serious mental health problems internally. During the 18 days I spent with him, I only saw the polite and well-mannered side.”
Grover alleged that the first incident of physical violence occurred on the third day of their marriage.
“I would get bruises. I would get shaken up. My father-in-law and mother-in-law tried to console him. They even cried in front of him and asked why he was behaving like this,” she claimed.
She further alleged that Haider became increasingly suspicious, often imagining situations that did not exist, and his condition worsened with excessive alcohol consumption.
Speaking about Aamir Khan, Grover claimed that the actor was aware of the misbehavior he faced.
She said, “I had heard that Aamir sir had said that I had not taken the right decision. That message had reached me before my marriage through other sources, but I did not pay attention. Aamir Khan sir did not want to have any relation with this family.”
Grover said she stayed in the marriage for five years, hoping things would get better. After the birth of her daughter, she filed for divorce but lost custody of Haider and his family.
He said, “I endured physical abuse for five years. My daughter was not with me. I did not see her for 10 years. I quietly sent money every month for her education. She is now 19 and visits me once or twice a week.”
Despite everything, Grover said she feels compassion for her ex-husband and is concerned about his current situation.
She said, “Today Haider’s condition is not good. He has no home and is struggling to even eat. Sometimes someone lets him stay in a chawl and sometimes a friend helps him. I feel sad. Whatever happened happened, but from a human point of view he was once my husband. He is surrounded by people who keep feeding him alcohol. There is no one to take care of him.”
Haider Ali Khan is the son of Shehnaz Khan from her first marriage. He was raised by filmmaker Tahir Hussain, Aamir Khan’s father, but he is not Tahir Hussain’s biological son. Before coming to films, Haider worked as a cabin crew member in Qatar Airways.
At the time of writing neither Haider Ali Khan nor Aamir Khan have publicly responded to Grover’s claims.
