East Anglia, a rural area in eastern England, is facing a hosepipe ban after becoming the driest part of the UK. But in a village in Norfolk, people are also preparing for the opposite problem of flooding.In Caistor St Edmund the ground has become so dry and hard that it feels as if walking on a tarmac. Farmers have harvested hay this year, but the crop is smaller than usual. If it doesn’t rain soon, they fear they won’t be able to harvest another crop.A prolonged period of hot, dry weather has forced water recycling company Anglian Water to impose its first hosepipe ban in 10 years. People have been told not to use hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars or fill paddling pools and hot tubs. However, they can still use the watering can.East Anglia is the driest region of Britain. According to Anglian Water, the region received only 39% of normal rainfall this spring, making it the second driest spring on record. Many rivers are flowing at very low levels, reservoirs have less water than normal and record-breaking temperatures have led to increased water use.“Obviously, customers want to stay cool and have fun in the sun, but adverse conditions are putting increasing pressure on the environment and water supplies,” Dr Geoff Darch, Anglian Water’s head of strategic asset planning, was quoted as saying by the BBC. He urged people to “turn off the hoses, let lawns go brown, let cars get dirty and use water more wisely”.

From drought to flood
Today people are being asked to save every drop of water. But residents of Caistor St Edmund have not forgotten what happened when there was too much water.According to The Guardian, the dry season is very different from what the village experienced in December 2020. During days of heavy rain, the drains filled with water as the surrounding fields were washed away. Streets turned into fast-flowing streams of dirty water, homes were flooded despite sandbags and volunteers working to keep drains clear. Residents say it was the worst flood ever.To reduce the risk of another flood, four wooden structures have now been erected along Wash Lane, where the stream is currently dry. These structures are called leaky dams or logjams. They do not stop the water completely, but rather slow it down. During heavy rains, they also trap branches and other natural materials, helping to slow the flow before water reaches roads and homes.

Norfolk County Council has spent over £35,000 on the project. The idea is inspired by beavers, which are often called ecosystem engineers because they naturally reshape rivers and wetlands by building dams.When beavers cut down trees and build dams, they slow the movement of water and create small ponds. These ponds also become breeding grounds for wildlife such as dragonflies and amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts.There are a small number of released otters in Norfolk, and some have reproduced successfully, but none live near this village. Wooden leech dams are designed to mimic the way beaver dams work and provide similar flood-control benefits.The project reflects the growing need to prepare for more extreme weather, characterized by heavy rainfall followed by a prolonged dry season. While leaky dams are expected to reduce the risk of flooding, large solar developments are also planned on nearby farms. This can change the flow of rainwater, the way rainwater moves across the ground before reaching rivers and streams.
