Openai has announced a free access to Chatgpt Plus for college students as part of its efforts to support education with AI. However, the proposal is currently available only in the US and Canada and will run by the end of May. Under this limited time initiative, Openai is providing its premium services such as GPT-4O, advanced file analysis and voice interactions, usually behind a $ 20/month pewall.
According to Openai, the initiative aims to support students during their final examination by providing advanced AI equipment without general membership cost. The company is demanding to place its AI platform as a study aid for overwhelmed students, especially during the exam crunch time. Under this initiative, eligible students will get the following premium services from OpenAI for free:
- GPT-4o (fastest and most advanced model of Openai)
- File upload (to analyze research paper, dataset and essay)
- Voice mode
- Image generation (via Dale for creative projects)
To supplement free Chatgpt Plus Access, Openai is also launching educational resources, including Openai Academy, which aims to help students understand AI, and Chatgpt Lab, cooperative learning and a place for quick treatment.
“Supporting AI literacy is not just about showing what these devices can do,” said Lih Belski, vice president of OpenaiI education. “It is about using students to use, cooperate and develop skills that will require them in the workforce.”
According to Forbes, more than one -third of young adults in the US are already using chatters to get educational aid. For example, the California State University System has collaborated with Openai to roll the AI-driven educational support. This new initiative, offering an advanced version for free will help OpenAII to expand the use of its AI platform in academic settings. Providing free access also allows Openai to collect more academic data to improve its model.
In particular, Openai’s move is part of the widespread trend of AI companies, which integrate their equipment in education. A day before the announcement of Openai, Anthropic introduced the cloud for education, a special version of the AI auxiliary designed for universities. As part of its push to academics, Anthropic has announced a partnership with Northeastern University, London School of Economics (LSE) and Champlane College. It has also collaborated with the Internet 2- A non-profit organization that the university manufactures tech infrastructure- and the instructions, the manufacturer of the canvas. According to companies, the purpose of these collaborations is to provide similar access to AI devices that support universities as they integrate AI in their learning environment.
Meanwhile, with the increasing presence of AI in academics, questions remain questions about its impact on education. Since AI becomes an essential tool for studies and research, universities may need to rethink the methods of evaluation to ensure that students must develop important thinking skills rather than relying too much on AI-borne reactions.
