Acidity is often triggered by spicy food, stress, or irregular eating habits, which motivates the stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. When this happens, people often turn to home remedies for relief. One of the most popular suggestions is eating yogurt due to its cooling effect. But is this really a solution? Let’s see what experts say.

Can yogurt help reduce acidity?

Many believe that yogurt can help reduce acid reflux symptoms, but it can actually contrast. According to Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangda, yogurt or curd is considered one of the heaviest foods in Ayurveda. Its sour and fermented nature can react with body heat and damage acid reflux. Eating curd while experiencing acidity can increase body temperature and increase fermentation in the intestine, which can cause more discomfort. Instead of providing relief, yogurt can make acidity worse.

What to do instead?

If you rely on yogurt, but still experience acidity, Jangda recommends to switch to the buttermilk (Chahe) instead. Buttermilk is mild, it has cooling properties, and can help calm the digestive system by reducing discomfort.

Easy diet tips to prevent acidity

If you often experience acidity, making small changes in your diet and lifestyle can help manage the problem. Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain shared five simple tips:

1. Eat small portions

Eating small food instead of older people can help control acid reflux. Using small plates and bowls makes part control easier and also supports weight management.

2. Drink ginger tea

To reduce acidity, swap your morning coffee for ginger or herbal tea. Ginger combines digestion and helps with blotting, gas and indigestion. It is a great post-food drink for better nutrient absorption.

3. Add healthy fat

Change processed and fried foods with nuts and seeds. Almonds, linseed and cashews are rich in healthy fat which help in dealing with acidity. Some of these can support daily digestion.

4. Choose non-citrus fruit

Sour fruits such as oranges and grapes are high in acid and can trigger acidity. Instead, go for non-site options such as bananas, apples and watermelons. Their fiber content supports digestion and prevents stomach issues.

5. Try plant-based milk

Dairy milk contains cassin, which can be difficult to digest and can increase acidity. Switching on almonds or coconut milk is a gentler option for tea, coffee and everyday consumption.
