China’s 5G military leap: could it change the course of war forever?

China has introduced the world’s first mobile 5G base station which is ready for battlefield deployment. According to a report, the advanced system provides high-speed, ultra-secure and low data transmission to 10,000 users within a radius of three kilometers. South China Morning Post (SCMP). According to details published in the Chinese journal, Telecommunications Science, this technology jointly developed by China Mobile Communications Group and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has the potential to change the war scenario.

Led by Hou Jie, a senior engineer of the PLA’s 31567th Unit, the deployment of the base station is an important step towards China building the largest unmanned army on earth, which includes the use of drones, robot dogs and other forms of intelligent warfare machines . Of unmanned hardware.

Notably, military-grade 5G communication systems differ significantly from civilian versions. The system must ensure connectivity where ground and base stations are absent or satellite signals are absent/disrupted. Additionally, the antenna height should not exceed 3 meters to avoid obstructions such as trees and buildings.

Keeping all these conditions in mind, scientists designed a new solution: a platform mounted on top of a military vehicle carrying three to four drones. These unmanned aerial vehicles fly alternately and serve as aerial base stations. Once the drone’s battery is discharged, another one takes its place, preventing any communication blackouts.

The PLA claims to have conducted multiple tests on the system, which ensures uninterrupted performance even when military units are moving at speeds of up to 80 km/h in urban or mountainous terrain and under electromagnetic interference. It achieves a total data throughput of 10 gigabits per second, with latency of less than 15 milliseconds.

“The operation of such a huge network necessarily requires powerful automation equipment and means, of which automatic station opening technology is one. This core network base station can perform data generation, data loading, baseline parameter configuration and other functions autonomously. can formally accomplish,” Hou’s team wrote.

China’s progress

This is not the first instance when China has claimed to introduce revolutionary hardware to enhance its battlefield capabilities. Last month, reports claimed that a Chinese scientist had equipped small drones with the ability to emit powerful metal-cutting laser beams – a feat previously thought impossible.

Currently, generating a laser beam capable of piercing metal body usually requires large equipment loaded on a truck which limits its use in real-life situations. However, according to the published study, the Chinese have developed a new device that can redirect laser beams from a ground station, allowing the drone to act as a mobile laser weapon without having to carry a power source.
