ChatGPIT suffers second major outage in a month, Microsoft reveals cause

This is the second time that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has suffered a major malfunction. According to the outage tracking website, DownDetector, at around 1:30 a.m. ET (12 a.m. IST), several users experienced issues with ChatGPT, as the chatbot suddenly stopped responding to queries. Some users received an “Internal Server Error” message.
According to DownDetector, several US users reported that the site was not working for them in the afternoon, although reports began to subside after half an hour or so.
Noting the outage, OpenAI posted on Twitter claiming that it has identified the issue and is working on it.
OpenAI did not specify the “upstream provider” associated with the problem, but its specific cloud provider, Microsoft, reported a “power issue” in one of its data centers, which began around the same time as the OpenAI problems and affected North America. . And problems with Xbox cloud gaming.
According to OpenAI, API and Sora were also experiencing outages. A few hours later, the company posted that the Sora issue has been fixed and that it is currently working on ChatGPT and the API, which are almost fixed.
ChatGPT has suffered several outages this month, with the most recent occurring on December 11, the same day Apple launched iOS 18.2 featuring GPT integration into Siri. As a result, some users may be unable to use the OpenAI chatbot through Siri at this time.
Last time, on December 11, ChatGPT faced a similar outage. During the previous outage also all three platforms were affected: Sora, ChatGPT and API. According to Downdetector, there were 2,483 outage reports during that time.
AI models have been struggling with this kind of problem for a long time. On November 8, ChatGPT was unavailable for 30 minutes for more than 19,000 users worldwide.
At the time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted that ChatGPT was down for 30 minutes, adding a sad emoji, saying, “We are much better than we were before in terms of reliability, but clearly we have There’s more work.”
