If you have an Amazon Prime account that you’re sharing with your friends and/or family, the platform has some new rules that will apply to you. This is a somewhat harsh action, but not as harsh as Netflix’s rules for piggybackers. Essentially, Amazon says that starting in January 2025, Amazon Prime customers will be able to log in to only 5 devices per account, only two of which can be televisions. This means, you can only play your Prime Video account on two TVs simultaneously, as soon as you log in to the third, you will be asked to log out from your other device.

“As part of your Prime membership, you and your family are entitled to enjoy Prime Video on up to five devices. From January 2025, we are updating our terms of use in India to include up to two TVs as part of your five devices entitlement. You can manage your devices on your Settings page or purchase another Prime subscription to watch Prime Video on more devices,” Amazon’s new policy note reads.

Currently, Prime subscribers are allowed to log in to 10 devices at a time. As far as devices are concerned, these include phones, laptops, tablets and TVs. The account will be supported across all devices as usual, however, Prime subscribers will only be able to use Prime Video on 5 devices at a time, including 2 TVs.

Amazon’s new policy also states that you can “remove and exchange up to 2 existing devices in any 30 day period”. Basically, if you have devices registered to your account (for example, to use streaming or Amazon services), you’ll need to deregister or remove up to two devices from your account within a 30-day period. Is allowed. You can also add or replace up to 2 new devices to your account to replace the removed devices during the same 30-day window. Essentially, you can manage or swap two devices every 30 days. The purpose of this is to limit possibly frequent changes, ensuring better control over device registration and account security.

Amazon Prime membership plans in India start at Rs 299 per month, Rs 599 for quarterly subscription and Rs 1499 for annual subscription. Additional options include the annual Prime Lite plan priced at Rs 799 and the Prime Shopping edition available at Rs 399 per year. Following the policy change, which will come into effect in January 2025, Prime Video subscription benefits will include unlimited ad-free streaming and access to up to five devices with support for up to two TVs.
