If you want to update your Aadhaar details or you have not updated your address, phone number, or any other information that requires a change, now is the time. The Unique Identification Authority of India is currently offering free online update for Aadhaar, but the deadline is December 14. This means there are only a few days left to update your Aadhaar for free. After the deadline, a minimum fee will apply to update your details.

Aadhaar’s governing body UIDAI initially announced the free update service earlier this year, extending it several times – from March to June, then to September and now till December 14. The deadline is just a few days away, this could be your last chance to update your Aadhaar without any charges. This time, the government authority is unlikely to extend the deadline.

However, this free service only covers updates to details like your address, phone number, name, etc. If you want to update your biometric details, you have to visit the Aadhaar Enrollment Centre. Let’s see in detail what you can update, how to update and why UIDAI is urging people to update their Aadhaar details.

Why is it important to update Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12 digit unique identification number issued by the Government of India. It serves as an identity proof to access various services and benefits. It is used for everything from enrolling in government welfare schemes and filing taxes to booking travel tickets and opening bank accounts. However, to avail these services, your details must be accurate and updated. Incorrect Aadhaar details can lead to significant challenges, including:

Authentication failures: Errors in demographic or biometric information can cause problems during financial transactions or accessing government services.

Service Disruption: Incorrect details may result in delay or denial of services.

Additionally, regular updates ensure the accuracy of Aadhaar data, thereby reducing the risk of misuse or fraud.

Who should update their Aadhaar?

While UIDAI advises all Aadhaar holders to update their details regularly, certain individuals should prefer this process:

Released 10 years ago: If your Aadhaar was created a decade or more ago, it is highly recommended to update your details.

Children turning 15: Aadhaar issued for minors requires biometric update when the child turns 15 to ensure that the data remains valid.

Biometric Changes: If your biometrics (for example, fingerprints or iris scans) have changed due to surgeries, accidents, or medical conditions, you should update them.

Repeated Authentication Problems: Experiencing failures during Aadhaar verification indicates the need to review and update your information.

While UIDAI is offering free updates for demographic details, biometric changes – such as fingerprint, iris scan, or photograph – must be made in person at an authorized Aadhaar centre. These updates are not part of the free service and involve a nominal fee. This is especially important for children and people who have had significant changes in their biometrics.
