Trigger warning: This article contains references to a person’s death.

Rashida Jones recently honored her late father Quincy Jones as she accepted an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar at the 15th Governors Awards on November 17. The renowned music producer, who died on November 3, was preparing a speech for the occasion. Rashida and her siblings recited the emotional words that her father had written before he passed away.

The 15th Governor’s Awards became a moment of reflection and celebration of Quincy Jones’ legacy. Quincy died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 91 and was posthumously awarded an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar. Rasheeda stood with her siblings Martina, Quincy III, and Kenya to accept the award on her behalf.

“Our father passed away two weeks ago today,” Rasheeda began. “He was really excited to be present tonight, and a lot of his family is here. And he’s got a lot of friends in this room, actually probably in every room… because wherever he went, he made relationships with everybody, with real people.’

He added, “And he really, really, really intended to be here with us tonight. And I want you to know that he’s here, right here.”

During her emotional speech, Rashida revealed that Quincy Jones had been working on her comments in anticipation of the ceremony. He shared words written by his father, which began by expressing gratitude for the honor.

Quincy’s speech reflects on his early dreams and career accomplishments. “As a teenager growing up in Seattle, I would sit for hours in the theater and daydream about composing for movies,” Rasheeda read.

He showed pride in his contribution to the entertainment industry. ”When I was a young film composer, you didn’t even see colored faces working in studio commissaries. I am very proud of the fact that my name and contribution can be included in that development.”

Quincy also appreciated the support he has received throughout his career. He wrote that he shares this award and tonight’s honor with all the wonderful directors, veteran actors and of course the extraordinary lyricists, composers and musicians with whom he has built deep friendships over his seven decades in this business, And know that he will do so. Don’t trade this night or those experiences for anything in the world.

Quincy Jones was a transformative figure in music and film, leaving a legacy spanning more than seven decades. Known for his work with artists such as Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra, as well as his contributions to film scores, Quincy paved the way for future generations.

Following his death, a private funeral was held in Los Angeles with his seven children and close friends present. The family is planning a large public ceremony so fans and industry colleagues can pay tribute.
