Elon Musk is in the headlines again, and this time it’s not about rockets or electric cars — it’s about the 2024 US presidential election. Musk has announced that he will give away $1 million every day to voters in some states through a lottery system. Yes, you read that right: $1 million a day. But there’s a catch – you have to be a registered voter in one of the key battleground states like Pennsylvania or Georgia and sign a petition that promotes free speech and gun rights.

What is Musk’s plan?

The billionaire, who has never been shy about sharing his political views, is using his PAC, America PAC, to garner support for Donald Trump’s campaign. PAC, or political action committee, is an organization that raises money to support or oppose political candidates, legislation, or policies. PACs are formed by individuals, businesses, or unions, and they may collect donations to use in campaigns, run advertisements, or hold rallies to influence elections. It’s not just about the $1 million lottery either. For example, if you’re in Pennsylvania, Musk is offering $100 just for signing the petition. And if you get your friends to sign up too, you can earn an extra $100. Other states get smaller but still attractive rewards, with $47 per successful referral.

It’s clear that Musk is making every effort to make sure that people are paying attention to his petition – and, by extension, to Trump’s campaign as well.

Is it legal?

This is where things get tricky. Although giving away money seems like a fun way to attract people, US law states that you cannot offer cash or prizes to influence voter registration. Many legal experts are already raising red flags. Campaign finance lawyer Brett Kappel has pointed out that paying people based on whether or not they are registered voters is a major prohibition under federal law. And election law expert Rick Hassan minced no words, calling Musk’s lottery “blatantly illegal.”

Basically, you can’t offer money to someone just for turning out to be a voter – that’s a federal law that Musk might be opposed to.

What will happen next?

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is also not letting it down. He is questioning whether Musk’s massive financial involvement in the election should be investigated. He has acknowledged Musk’s right to his political opinions, but when money starts flowing into politics in such a direct manner, it raises eyebrows.

For now, Musk is pushing his lottery, even handing him the first million-dollar check A winner in Pennsylvania. But with a number of legal concerns rising, there’s a chance this gamble won’t play out the way they hope. Keep an eye on it—it’s sure to get more interesting as Election Day gets closer.
