Javed Akhtar is one of the most acclaimed screenwriters of Bollywood who has gained fame since the 70s. In a new conversation, the literary icon revealed that he considers the 80s as the darkest phase of Hindi cinema as many songs with double meanings were written during this period. As a result, he wrote only one song for Karan Johar’s film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which also became the title of the film. But, later he started avoiding writing songs with absurd or double meaning due to his morality. However, now he regrets not being able to work in the film.
Javed ji recently appeared on Sapan Verma’s YouTube channel, Chill Sesh and remembered that phase of his career. The iconic screenwriter, one of the most recognized lyricists in Bollywood, spoke in detail about the incident. He worked with Salim Khan during the 1970s and the pair wrote successful films during that era, including Sholay, Don, Zanjeer, Deewar and more. Later, the couple separated in 1982.
Javed Akhtar remembers the 80s, which were a dark period for Bollywood in terms of writing. He told how at that time absurd or obscene songs were written and became famous. This was his principle and he decided to avoid being a part of such writings. In his words, “I consider the ’80s to be the darkest time for Hindi cinema. People were either writing songs with double meaning or songs that had no meaning. I avoided doing films whose lyrics were based on any kind of sentiment.” Kind of seemed absurd or obscene to me.”
Later, when he wrote the song Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for Karan Johar’s film, Karan Johar chose the title of the film from it, and he refused to write more songs because he felt it was one of those absurd films. .
He candidly admits, “This principle led me to turn down a very successful film – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I wrote the first song for it, but when Karan decided on the title, I changed that name. Refused to work on the film. I thought, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? I regret it now, but at that time I refused.
Despite the confusion, Javed Akhtar worked with Karan Johar in their 2003 film Kal Ho Na Ho. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee became a major critical and commercial hit. Even Kal Ho Na Ho became one of the most memorable films in the history of Bollywood.
