Here Are 5 Easy Tips To Make Perfect Rava (Semolina) Upma At Home
1. Use a thick bottomed pan.
You might think that any vessel can be used to cook upma. However, we recommend using a thick-bottomed kadhai or saucepan for this recipe. Making upma requires adding a lot of ingredients, and such a vessel will ensure that it does not burn during the process. Also, keep the flame low and reduce it to medium only for tempering with the spices and onions.
2. Roast the semolina before mixing it with water.

Roasting the semolina gives the upma a different flavour and also improves its texture. You don’t need to spend too much time on this. You just need 5 minutes. The flame should be kept as low as possible and stir constantly. The colour of the semolina should change very slightly – it should still look white even after you stop roasting.
3. Add curd or buttermilk to get better consistency.
Another way to improve the texture and taste of upma is to use curd or buttermilk. This adds a tang to the upma which is essential to get the best taste of upma. It also helps in binding the other ingredients better and gives the dish a soft mouth feel.
4. Make sure the ratio of semolina and water is correct.
If you want the upma to be soft (but not sticky), you need to pay attention to the proportions. For 1 cup of rava, use 3 cups of water (and 1/2 cup of curd). If you are using buttermilk, we suggest 2 cups of water and 2 cups of buttermilk. Another important thing is to use warm water for this purpose.

Use the right amount of rava, water and curd/buttermilk while making upma
5. When the upma is almost ready, add ghee and stir.
How do you fix lumps in upma? Apart from adding the right amount of water and rava, you can also use ghee. When your upma is almost ready, add some ghee to it and stir well. This will make it taste good and the upma will not form big lumps.
