A video of a vlogger named Roman Kondratiev, in which he is seen enjoying Thai “dancing shrimp”, has shocked many social media users. In the now viral video, he explains that he ate a live shrimp salad in Thailand, called goong ten. He shows a vendor putting it together, putting some chopped red onions, greens, sugar and “lemon juice mixed with something” into a takeaway plastic bowl. Finally, he removes the live shrimp from the water (only stored in his eatery) and uses a net to transfer them into the salad bowl. He quickly closes the lid and shakes the container well.

The vlogger says, “This dish is a little difficult to eat because the shrimp is hopefully full. I’ve tried the salad before but I didn’t like it. So this time my goal was to really enjoy it. And not be distracted by the fact that I’m eating live animals.” He takes two spoons of the salad and chews it slowly. He said “It was really good. Spicy, salty and a little bit of seafood flavor. Great snack.” Watch the video below:

The reel has garnered over 1 million views so far. In the comments, many people did not like the idea. Some called it “cruel” and “pointless”. On the other hand, many expressed interest in trying it out and others even claimed that they have already tasted it (and loved it). Here are some reactions from Instagram:
“What does that mean? It’s unnecessary for both shrimp and humans.”
“Nobody in my Thai family eats raw meat or drinks tap water. The risk is too high. The seller doesn’t care about your health, he only cares about profits.”
“I’m not a vegetarian, but I think this is unnecessary cruelty.”
“I have lobsters at my oyster farm and I eat them all the time, alive!”
“Not gonna lie, I was a bit hesitant at first, but I think it’s worth a try.”
“It’s the extreme version of ceviche.”
“You can’t tell me this is good.”
“I must admit I do quite enjoy the dancing shrimp. I hope they don’t suffer too much.”
