Google Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold

We’re just a few weeks away from the official release of the next generation of Google Pixel phones. Scheduled for a global launch on August 13 at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, the Pixel 9 series is arriving a few months ahead of the traditional fall release. Not only is the launch date a surprise, but Google is also expected to introduce four models as part of the Pixel 9 lineup this year: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the rebranded Pixel 9 Pro Fold. In addition to the phones, Google is also expected to unveil the next-generation Pixel Watch 3, as well as make more AI-related announcements.

Let’s take a detailed look at what we can expect from Google’s upcoming annual hardware launch.

The new Pixel 9 lineup

This time around, Google is expected to bring significant changes to its Pixel lineup. Unlike the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, Google is rumoured to introduce three Pixel phones and a foldable model. The new Pixel 9 Pro XL is expected to be the successor to the Pixel 8 Pro, while the Pixel 9 Pro is likely to replace the Pixel 8. Additionally, a new affordable Pixel 9 variant is expected to take on Apple’s iPhone lineup. And yes, there’s also the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Pixel 9: The standard Pixel 9 model is rumoured to feature a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and 12GB of RAM. This marks a significant boost to its camera capabilities, promising better low-light performance and higher-quality photos overall.

Pixel 9 Pro: The Pixel 9 Pro is expected to feature a 6.3-inch display, 16GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage. The camera system on the Pro model is said to get significant upgrades, with leaks suggesting it will feature a 48-megapixel telephoto lens and a 42-megapixel front-facing camera.

Pixel 9 Pro XL: In addition to these models, Google is expected to introduce the Pixel 9 Pro XL. This variant is expected to have a larger display between 6.5 and 6.9 inches, making it ideal for users who prefer a larger screen. The phone is also expected to have a Tensor G4 chip, Titan M2 security module, 16GB of RAM, and a 50-megapixel main camera with a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 48-megapixel zoom lens. On the front, the XL variant may have a 42-megapixel selfie camera and is expected to be priced around $1,099.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Google is also expected to unveil its second-generation foldable phone, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This model is expected to build on its previous model with a more refined design and improved functionality. It will likely share the Tensor G4 chip with the Pixel 9 series, which promises better performance and efficiency. With an 8-inch main display and a 6.3-inch cover screen, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold aims to offer a seamless experience whether it is used as a tablet or a phone.

pixel watch 3

Although the Pixel Watch 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed, leaks suggest that it will be launched at the event. The new smartwatch is expected to be available in two sizes – 41mm and 45mm – aimed at most users. Key improvements include a 2,000-nit display, thinner bezels, and a longer-lasting battery with faster charging capabilities. Google is also rumoured to include advanced running metrics to enhance the watch’s workout tracking capabilities.

Pixel Buds Pro 2

Although not much has been officially revealed, rumours suggest that Google will also introduce the Pixel Buds Pro 2. The next-generation earbuds are expected to retain the familiar egg-shaped charging case and in-ear design, along with new colour options like Raspberry, Mojito, Porcelain, and Haze. These wireless earbuds are likely to feature improved sound quality and battery life, further strengthening Google’s presence in the audio market.

Android 15 and Gemini AI

The new Pixel phones are also expected to come with the latest Android 15. However, there are reports that Google may delay the release of Android 15. But nothing has been confirmed. Along with this, Google is hoping to expand the functionality of its Gemini AI assistant, which has been gradually improved in recent months. The AI-powered assistant includes new features such as improved smart home control, memory for event details, and the ability to recall previously viewed content. These advancements are expected to make Gemini AI a more integral part of the Pixel ecosystem, providing users with an even more personalized experience.
