94-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh appeals for Indian citizenship, saying she wants to die as an Indian.

Kondragunta Mahalakshamma, 94, became a US citizen in 2000 and lived in the US for about 18 years. Now, she wants to get her Indian citizenship back as the Andhra Pradesh woman’s last wish is to die as an Indian. The video of him meeting the district officials and requesting them to make him an Indian citizen soon is going viral.Mahalaxmamma is a native of Chintagumpala village in Chinganjam mandal of Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh. Along with her son, she appeared before Bapatla District Collector J Venkat Murali on Wednesday and requested that her citizenship application be processed at the earliest.Mahalakshamma said that after the death of her husband, Nagabhushanam, she moved to Petersburg, Virginia, United States, to live with her son, Butchaiah Choudhary, an oncologist. She obtained US citizenship in July 2000 and lived there for almost 18 years.She returned to India in 2018 and settled in her native village after her son worked at the NRI Hospital in Mangalagiri.He said he has already given up his US citizenship and applied for Indian citizenship through an online portal. She told officials that she wanted to spend the rest of her life in her motherland and wanted her last rites to be performed in her native village.She said, “Collector Garu, I am close to 95 years of age. My only wish is to spend my last days in my motherland as an Indian citizen. I want my last rites to be performed in my native village. I have already given up my US citizenship. Please help me get Indian citizenship as soon as possible.” She stressed that if her citizenship was restored she would respect the Constitution of India and abide by all laws of the country. She requested the authorities to grant her the legal right to live the rest of her life in the country where she was born.The Collector said that action will be taken on the application as per the procedure. After completion of the investigation, a report will be sent to the state government, which will send its recommendation to the Center for consideration on citizenship.
