US President Donald Trump and Republican Senator Bill Cassidy engaged in a heated exchange during a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans on Thursday (local time), highlighting growing divisions within the GOP over Trump’s handling of Iran and his broader political agenda. The confrontation began after Trump demanded an explanation from Republicans who joined Democrats a day earlier in voting to curb his military authority in Iran. Cassidy, one of four Republican senators who supported the move, challenged the president, saying the administration had failed to adequately explain its objectives and strategy.CNN later quoted Cassidy as recalling the incident, “I stood up and said, ‘You didn’t tell the American people what was happening.’ He said he questioned why the military operation dragged on from the expected four weeks to four months without achieving its original goals.Trump responded angrily, raising his voice at Cassidy, according to several people in the room. The Louisiana senator said he shouted in “tone and intensity” similar to the president. At one point, Trump ordered Cassidy to sit down, but the senator refused. Trump then reportedly called him “crazy”. Cassidy continued to argue and eventually sat down after colleagues urged him to defuse the situation. A White House official later accused the senator of “completely embarrassing himself” during the conversation. The tense encounter came as Trump attacked four Republicans who supported the Iran war powers resolution on social media, calling them “Republican losers.” Senator John Kennedy later said that Trump was “crazy as a murderer” over the vote. The clash highlighted growing frustration among some Republicans as Trump continues to pressure Congress on issues ranging from Iran policy to election law. Many GOP lawmakers have privately expressed concern over the president’s political strategy and falling approval ratings ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
