Introduction

Motorola recently refreshed its clamshell Razr line with the new Razr 70 models, or as they are known in the US – the Razr 2026. It wasn’t a huge refresh by any means, but definitely some touch-ups here and there. That said, according to our reader survey, as far as most of you are concerned, not enough has changed to justify the serious asking price of all three Razer models – vanilla, Plus and Ultra. The mere fact that well-discounted 2025 models are still in circulation is, in a way, limiting the market potential of its latest trio.

Motorola Razr 70/Razer 2026 review

This is certainly not a particularly good start to this review of the vanilla Razer 70/Razer 2026 models. It’s the cheapest phone of the three in relative terms, but certainly not in absolute terms, as the base 8GB/256GB unit will cost you $800 / €870 / £800 MSRP. Overall, just a few days ago, we saw the 2025 Razr Ultra with 1TB of storage selling for just $800 directly from Motorola’s own US store. Sure, it was a strong sale, probably to get rid of stock, but it doesn’t bode well for the prospects of the Razer 70/Razer 2026 family. Still, we have to also try to look at the current pricing and evaluate the phone while hoping for a better value deal in the future.

So, what’s changed with the basic model in 2026, at least at first glance? Well, like we said, a few things here and there. The hinge is now made of titanium, which is an improvement over last year’s stainless steel. And even though the rest of the stuff in the Motorola Razr 70 is a little vague about the specifications, we can only imagine that they’re just as good or maybe a little better than last year’s.

The IP48 ingress protection rating is still present, which should allow the phone to be immersed in fresh water up to 1.5 meters and survive for 30 minutes, as well as some degree of dust resistance. However you generally don’t want any fine dust or sand around your foldables. There’s also now MIL-STD-810H compliance for added peace of mind, and it’s something we’ve come to expect from Motorola phones at this point.

The display setup looks largely the same as last year, though with the notable addition of Dolby Vision support. Motorola probably went through the effort of certifying the panel this time. Of course, it could also be a slightly improved version of the panel. We’ll be sure to check back in the performance section of the review.

Technically, the Razer 70 comes with a chipset upgrade over its predecessor, but only technically, as the Dimensity 7450X is essentially the same chip as the Dimensity 7400X. Things are still getting weird in the memory department. On one hand, Motorola decided to go for faster UFS 3.1 storage chips, which is great news. However, there is no longer a 512GB storage version for the Razer 70. This is up from 256GB. Even stranger, the 12GB RAM variants of last year’s roster are gone. The Razer 70 is available with 8GB RAM in both its variants. This is kind of unfortunate, especially in the current AI-centric environment. Perhaps the chip shortage affected Motorola unusually? We can’t say for sure.

The camera department sees an upgrade from last year’s 13MP unit to a 50MP ultrawide sensor this year. However, unfortunately, this is not what we would consider a straight-up upgrade as there is no longer autofocus on this camera.

And perhaps it’s also notable that, without changing the phone’s dimensions or weight at all from last year, Motorola has still managed to fit in a slightly larger 4,800 mAh battery. It’s a small improvement, but still a welcome one.

unbox

Let’s start things off with a quick unboxing. The Razer 70 comes in a pretty plain black, two-piece box with very little actual color on it. We believe the glossy black raised lettering looks nice and premium, even if it’s not flashy. The box is made of very strong cardboard. There is no plastic anywhere in the packaging. It’s all recyclable, and soy ink is used for all the letters. It was very nice to see.

Our European review unit does not get a charger in the box. Some other regions may have it, but you’ll have to check with your local retailer. You just get a fairly basic USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a large and immediately visible QR code that directs you to Motorola’s own store to purchase a suitable first-party charger, if that’s what you want to do.

Motorola still throws in at least one bonus item for free – a two-piece “case”, or rather, bumper shell attachment for the phone. It also appears to be color-matched as our dark green review unit came with a green bumper.
