DOJ is investigating Iran’s supreme leader’s ties to US banks

The US Justice Department is reportedly investigating Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei as part of a broader investigation into alleged money laundering and corruption. The probe is examining how Khamenei allegedly built a global investment portfolio with exposure to major Wall Street banks, according to officials familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The report said investigators are examining transactions involving companies overseen by Khamenei and reviewing whether US financial institutions played any role in facilitating those transactions.According to Bloomberg, the banks under review include JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup. The investigation does not mean that criminal charges will be filed, but Khamenei remains the primary focus of the investigation.Khamenei became supreme leader of Iran after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike. As the country’s highest official, he has final authority over major state matters, including foreign policy and Iran’s nuclear program.Meanwhile, rumors are rife about the condition of Mojtaba following the death of her father Ali Khamenei, who was the supreme leader at the time, in the attack on February 28.Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was “confident” that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is alive and “increasingly engaging” in leadership matters.
