US Vice President JD Vance has outlined a three-point framework at the heart of a proposed peace deal between Washington and Tehran, emphasizing that Iran must give up nuclear weapons, keep the Strait of Hormuz open and meet strict conditions before receiving any economic benefits.Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said, “The agreement is really very simple. One, Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. Two, the Strait of Hormuz is open. And number three, there are all these benefits contemplated that the Iranians could get if they behave.”His comments come as the United States and Iran move closer to signing a peace deal in Switzerland on Friday.Vance said any economic relief for Tehran would depend on significant changes in its conduct, including ending support for terrorist groups and abandoning efforts to rebuild its nuclear program. He said, “If they stop developing terrorism, if they stop funding terrorism, if they stop supporting the rebuilding of the nuclear weapons program, they might actually get some real benefits. If they don’t do any of these things, they get nothing.”The Vice President also criticized efforts by Iranian officials to misrepresent the proposed deal.“The Iranian propagandists are out there (saying) we get all these things and they leave out the fact that they only get these things if they fundamentally change themselves as a country,” Vance said.According to Vance, the United States will benefit no matter how Tehran responds to the deal.He said, “As the President said, the United States wins either way. Either they get nothing, we destroy their nuclear program and open the Strait of Hormuz, or they fundamentally change themselves and that’s a big win, too. It’s really up to them.”The US vice president said that under the proposed arrangement, Iran would effectively enter a probationary phase, with Washington judging Tehran based on its actions rather than its commitments.Vance said, “What I learned from the President of the United States is that whether friend or foe, you should not trust anyone, you should trust people’s actions.”“That’s why the way this agreement is designed is that if they act the right way, if they behave the right way, they get a lot of benefits,” he said.US President Donald Trump promoted the proposed agreement in a post on Truth Social, calling it a ‘great deal’ aimed at bringing stability to the entire region. The US president wrote, “This great agreement will bring peace and security to the entire region. Many presidents have tried to make peace with Iran, and all before me have failed. For the first time, the region’s leaders have a president who can help them achieve real peace.”Meanwhile, G7 leaders welcomed the emerging deal between the United States and Iran during their summit in France.
