Indian-origin woman serves home-cooked food in Belfast after violence in the city: ‘People are afraid to go out’

In a city rocked by violence and fear, an Indian-origin woman in Belfast stepped forward with home-cooked meals to support families afraid to leave their homes.Ruchira Rangprasad moved to Northern Ireland from India three years ago and launched a social media appeal offering freshly prepared meals to people affected by the recent unrest. Their initiative quickly gained momentum and attracted dozens of volunteers willing to help deliver food across the city, Reuters reports.According to RTÉ News, more than 50 food boxes were distributed within one day. Ultimately, the effort expanded from an individual gesture to a broader community response. The support campaign emerged after anti-immigration violence and rioting spread across parts of Belfast following a knife attack earlier this week. Masked groups targeted ethnic minorities and foreign residents, setting fire to homes, vehicles and public property. Many migrant families were forced to remain indoors or flee after being directly targeted.Amid the unrest, Rangprasad said she felt compelled to take action despite her fears. “People are afraid to leave their homes, and food is like a basic need, and especially nutritious home-cooked food… so I thought, I should cook and help feed people,” he told Reuters.Their call for help was swiftly answered, with more than 30 volunteers joining on June 10 alone. Most were strangers who came to prepare and distribute food to those in need. The violence destabilized Belfast’s migrant communities. The disorder began after the stabbing of Stephen Ogilvie, who suffered serious injuries, including the loss of an eye. Police later charged Hadi Alodid, 30, with attempted murder, possession of a bladed weapon without reasonable excuse and threatening to kill an NHS worker. According to his family, Ogilvy remains in stable condition. In the days that followed, Northern Ireland saw two nights of unrest related to the incident. Twelve officers were injured and at least 16 people were arrested as violence spread across the affected areas.
