Bollywood has seen many actors exit films; The producers express their disappointment publicly, causing the friendship to fall apart overnight. But the latest controversy involving Ranveer Singh, Farhan Akhtar and the non-cooperation directive of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has sparked a big debate: Does a body like FWICE really have the authority to “ban” a superstar? And more importantly, is anyone in the industry taking it seriously?

Controversy arose after FWICE issued non-cooperation directions against Ranveer Singh amid differences with Farhan Akhtar. don 3. Reports also claimed that Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment had demanded compensation of Rs 45 crore for pre-production expenses. According to claims, the actor left the film two weeks before its shooting began, causing huge financial losses.

While neither Ranveer Singh nor Farhan Akhtar have publicly spoken in detail about the controversy, the federation’s move has left many business insiders questioning both its intentions and legality. Although the directive does not ban Ranveer from working, it does prevent members associated with the body from collaborating with the actor.

FWICE can’t stop anyone

Speaking to India Today, trade analyst Komal Nahta termed the move as ‘nonsense’. He compared the situation to “two children fighting”, with one trying to get his point across by threatening consequences. According to Nahta, the federation might have felt insulted as Ranveer had allegedly ignored several notices sent to him. Nahata said, “But perhaps he did not come because he did not consider it an appropriate platform.”

He further explained that FWICE is neither a judicial body, nor a statutory body, nor has it been appointed by the government to stop anyone from working. At best, the federation can only advise its members, he said.

This is why many within the industry believe that FWICE has inadvertently weakened its position by making the directive public. Nahta said, “They may have won the dispute, but lost the war. Now, if something serious happens in the future, people will not take it seriously.”

non-cooperation directive is unnecessary

Film business analyst Girish Wankhede expressed similar sentiments, insisting that it was fundamentally a conflict between two industry stakeholders that should have remained a private matter. He said, “This was purely a dispute between Ranveer Singh and Farhan Akhtar. Such issues happen all the time in the film industry and are mostly resolved amicably. It was unnecessary.”

And the history of Bollywood has proved this over the years. From the infamous Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan controversy to actors leaving the film days before the shoot, or even someone like Kishore Kumar being banned by All India Radio, the industry has survived a lot of bad situations. Most disagreements are ultimately resolved behind closed doors because, at the end of the day, there is too much money, reputation, and business at stake.

That’s why many insiders are questioning why a trade organization would step in with such dramatic language instead of acting as an arbitrator. “These bodies are meant to resolve issues, not make them more serious. Their first approach should have been to make both sides sit together and talk,” Wankhede said.

But what exactly went wrong?

While speculations are around don 3 The debate is going on online, with neither side officially detailing their version. However, Nahata claimed that there were strong rumors that Ranveer had concerns about the script. And if Farhan chose not to comply, the blame cannot be placed entirely on Ranveer.

And from an actor’s point of view, that logic makes sense. After all, stars today are not just artists. They are brands that have huge box-office pressure on their shoulders. One wrong movie can damage years of momentum.

Nahta said, “Every actor wants a blockbuster. If someone feels the script is not working, they have the right to ask for changes.” He noted how many people in the industry are refusing to see this as a simply “unprofessional” or “unsupportive” move.

No one wants to accept the battle of ego

Beyond the legalities and business politics, there’s another layer to the story: ego.

FWICE reportedly sent several notices to Ranveer Singh, and his alleged lack of response has further escalated the matter.

Wankhede admitted that it might have become an ego issue for both sides. He said, “Actors have egos, yes. But there are many ways to reach out to a star. Everyone in the industry knows that stars don’t always respond to notices or calls directly. You can still reach out to them through proper channels and sort things out.”

Meanwhile, Nahta believes that the public nature of the directive itself exposes the intention behind it. He said, “They wanted to bring him to his knees in public. But he is having the last laugh because, honestly, no one in the industry is taking this directive seriously.”

So what will happen next?

Industry insiders believe there are only two realistic outcomes. One: Ranveer completely ignores the instruction and moves on, considering it irrelevant. Two: A mediator arrives quietly, negotiations take place behind closed doors and the matter is resolved without any drama.

Nahta also shared with us that the actor is unlikely to approach the federation legally as doing so would inadvertently validate his authority. “If he goes to court or responds strongly, it gives him more importance. He can sort it out with Farhan personally,” he said.

For now, don 3 remains one of Bollywood’s most anticipated projects, Ranveer Singh remains one of the biggest stars in the industry, and FWICE’s move has sparked a larger conversation about power, authority and relevance in modern Bollywood.
