Riteish Deshmukh’s biggest film Raja Shivaji is going to be released in theaters in a few days. Advance booking was opened recently, and initial reports look very promising. The film sold around 20,000 tickets at the Marathi box office in no time, marking a record opening.
Of this, around 10,000 tickets were sold at PVR Inox, followed by 4000 tickets at Mirage Cinemas and 3000 tickets at Cinepolis. MovieMax has recorded around 2300 admissions so far. At least this is a solid start. If the epic saga maintains this momentum, it could easily register unprecedented sales ahead of its premiere. There are still three and a half days left for the release of the film.
Raja Shivaji has the potential to make unprecedented starts; However, it remains to be seen whether it can challenge the all-time top openers in Maharashtra. For the record, the top three opening days in Maharashtra belong to Dhurandhar 2 (Rs 22 crore), Pushpa 2 (Rs 18 crore), and Chhaava (Rs 17 crore). Dhurandhar: The Revenge benefited from expensive ticket prices. The Riteish Deshmukh starrer should aim to top these three titles in its home territory, though that won’t be an easy task.
For those unaware, Raja Shivaji is a biographical drama of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Riteish not only starred in the film but also directed the epic saga. It stars an ensemble cast that includes Sanjay Dutt, Genelia Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Vidya Balan, Bhagyashree, Mahesh Manjrekar, Amol Gupte and others. Salman Khan is playing an important guest role in the film. Backed by Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios, Raja Shivaji is the biggest film of Marathi cinema to date. Apart from Marathi, it is also releasing in Hindi and Telugu on Maharashtra Day, May 1, 2026.
