Lyricist-poet Vairamuthu wins Jnanpith award, third Tamil awardee in 20 years
Acclaimed poet and lyricist Vairamuthu has been honored with the Jnanpith Award for his contribution to Indian literature. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin shared a post on social media and congratulated the veteran.
Renowned poet, lyricist and novelist Vairamuthu has been honored with the prestigious Jnanpith Award for his significant contribution to Indian literature. This was announced on 14 March. The Jnanpith Award is the country’s highest literary award, and Vairamuthu is the third Tamil recipient of the award in 20 years. The award recognizes his achievements in poetry, novels and film songs, highlighting his skills across multiple genres.

“The Jnanpith award goes to poet Vairamuthu, who rules Tamil with his poetry! I was meeting and talking to the poet this morning. This good news came shortly after, which added to the sweetness of that meeting! This award, which till now has gone only to Akilan and Jayakanthan in Tamil, has brought oceans of happiness to them and to us, they have joined hands with our ruling dynasty of poets who play with traditional and modern poetry and innovate in the world of Tamil literature,” his post, loosely translated into English, read.
He said, “If the leader was an artiste, he would have praised Kaviperasu wholeheartedly. I stand with him and congratulate Kaviperasu @vairamuthu. Tamil Nadu congratulates poets for their reign.”

All about Vairamuthu’s career
Vairamuthu began his literary journey with the publication of poetry collections Vaigarai Megangal In 1972. Since then, he has written more than 40 books, including poems and several novels. His writings are celebrated for their depth and cultural resonance in Tamil literature, and his work spans more than five decades.
Many of his poems reflect social and cultural changes in Tamil society, often addressing themes of love, nature and human conflict. His literary style is known for its lyrical beauty and emotional intensity, which has resonated with readers across generations.
Apart from his literary achievements, Vairamuthu has made a lasting impact on Indian cinema by writing the lyrics of approximately 7,500 songs in Tamil films. His songs have been an integral part of many acclaimed soundtracks, earning him wide recognition among the film industry and audiences.

Vairamuthu holds a distinguished record as the only person from India to have received the National Film Award for Best Song seven times. This achievement underlines his influence as a lyricist and his continuing contribution to Indian music and cinema. In 2003, Vairamuthu was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Kallikkattu Ethikasam. The Sahitya Akademi Award is one of the most prestigious literary honors in India, reflecting the importance of his work in contemporary literature.
The Government of India has acknowledged his contributions to literature and art by honoring him with both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. These civilian honors are reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields.
