Re-releases have become a new trend in the post-pandemic times. After the phenomenal success of Mankatha this year, Ajith Kumar’s another film, Thunivu, returns to the theaters with Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan starrer Gilli. The box office rivalry between the two superstars of Tamil cinema is not hidden from anyone. Here’s a look at how both Thunivu and Ghilli performed in their opening weekends.
Ghilli started with Rs. Made a grand total of Rs 55 lakh at the box office. 1.95 crore in its opening weekend, of which around Rs. 1.70 crore came from Tamil Nadu alone, while the remaining Rs. The remaining 25 lakh came from India. In contrast, Thunivu opened with Rs. 18 lakhs and its first weekend ended at Rs. 42 lakhs.
That said, the Thalapathy Vijay starrer took a huge hit of Rs. Ajit Kumar’s film earned Rs 1.53 crore. However, one must keep in mind that Ghillie had the edge in performance. While Gilli was released in around 250 screens in Tamil Nadu apart from the rest of the Indian markets, Thunivu’s release was exclusive to its home state alone, where it had around 225 screens.
