Mammootty on his role in upcoming film Kalamkaval: You won’t like my character
Mammootty revealed insights about his role and casting decisions for his upcoming film Kalamkaval, highlighting his preference for Vinayakan in the lead role. This film is going to be released in theaters on 5th December.

Just days ahead of the release of Jithin’s Jose’s Kalamkaval, Mammootty shared details about the creative choices behind the film and his decision to step away from the lead role. Speaking at a promotional event, the veteran actor revealed that he was initially approached to play the role of a police officer in the film, but he declined, thinking that someone else would be better suited for the role.
Mammootty said that he suggested Vinayakan’s name to the team and considered him the most suitable one. He said, “Vinayakan is the protagonist in the film and I am playing the antagonist.” The teaser had already hinted at Vinayakan’s prominence, showing different colors for the first two letters of his name. Mammootty confirmed that this was a deliberate creative decision taken to put his co-star in the spotlight.
The actor also talked about his character and called it one of the most unconventional roles he has played in recent years. According to him, this character has been deliberately created in such a way that it is difficult for the audience to like him. Mammootty said, “You may find it difficult to like my character in the film, but you cannot forget him after you leave the theatre.” He said that although his role is experimental, the film itself is not.
Addressing the speculations surrounding the story, the actor recently clarified that his character is not based on serial killer Mohan Kumar, better known as Cyanide Mohan. Rumors surfaced after the teaser release, but Mammootty dismissed them during a conversation with screenwriter and actor Shanthi Mayadevi.
Mammootty is now preparing for the release of the film by emphasizing that Kalamkaval He will be featured in a performance that is different from his recent work, particularly with the contrast between his antagonist role and Vinayakan’s lead portrayal. Apart from this, he is also working on Mahesh Narayanan’s Patriot, where he will be seen sharing screen space with Mohanlal.
