Woody and Buzz vs. Tablet? Toy Story 5 trailer hints at a digital disaster
Disney and Pixar have released the first look at ‘Toy Story 5’, revealing a new smart tablet character and the return of familiar voices ahead of the film’s June 2026 premiere.

Pixar has unveiled the first teaser trailer of its upcoming film ‘Toy Story 5’, which is scheduled to release on June 19, 2026. The new trailer introduces LilyPad, a high-tech, frog-shaped smart tablet that joins the established team of toys and presents a new challenge for Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the gang. The film is the fifth installment of the iconic animated franchise, which began in 1995 and is known for its technical innovation and storytelling prowess.
Set to explore how toys govern play time in an increasingly digital world, the trailer shows the impact Lilypad has on the group. According to a press release, the LilyPad is described as “a high-tech, frog-shaped smart tablet that makes Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s job increasingly difficult when they face a brand new threat to playtime,” highlighting a major plot point in the sequel.

Voice actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprized their roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively. Joining them are Joan Cusack as Jessie, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog and Tony Hale as Forky. The new film also introduces Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, who brings a new dynamic to the group.
‘Toy Story 5’ will be helmed by Andrew Stanton, who previously directed ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘Wall-E’ and ‘Finding Dory’. Stanton has a long association with the franchise, having co-written the first four films, and is credited as sole screenwriter for the latest entry.
The ‘Toy Story’ franchise debuted in 1995 as the first fully computer-animated feature film. Its sequels, released in 1999, 2010, and 2019, have achieved critical and commercial success, with both the third and fourth films grossing over $1 billion at the global box office and winning Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.
Following the success of the initial two ‘Toy Story’ films, Disney acquired Pixar in 2006. The series remains Pixar’s most lucrative series, consistently garnering audience and critical praise.
‘Toy Story 5’ is set to be Pixar’s 31st feature film. The studio’s latest release, ‘Elio’, released on June 20, grossed $152 million at the box office, while its predecessor ‘Inside Out 2’ earned over $1.5 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2024. Before ‘Toy Story 5’, Pixar plans to release another original film, ‘Hoppers’ in March 2026.
Industry observers say that while Pixar’s recent box office results have been up and down, returns from established franchises like ‘Toy Story’ have remained strong, contributing significantly to the studio’s overall performance.
