A recent serosurway in Tamil Nadu has revealed that almost all the elderly participants, about 97%, showed seropocyties for Kovid -19.

This means that most of them had protective antibodies against Sars-Cov-2 viruses, indicating that either they were earlier in contact with the virus or obtained vaccinations.

It is the fifth stage of the Covid-19 Serosurway operated by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medical Medical (DPH) and the State Public Health Laboratory (Sphl).

The survey was conducted in April 2024 after a gap of three years, such a final study was held in December 2021.

Blood samples were collected from 3,643 elderly persons in six districts: Chennai, Thiruvallur, Thiruvanamalai, Thiruchi, Dharmapuri and Kanniakumari.

What is a Cerosurway?

Serosurvi is used to detect the presence of antibodies in the blood.

These antibodies, especially immunoglobulin ji (IGG), develop after a person infected with the virus or receive the vaccine.

When antibodies are detected through blood tests, the person is called “seropoctive”.

This helps scientists and health officials to understand how widely a disease in a community has spread, even in those who did not show the symptoms or were never tested.

In this phase, out of 1,214 samples initially tested, 97% were IGG antibodies for Sars-Cov-2.

“In this situation, a non-virulant strain (of Sars-Cov-2) may not have a lot of impact, but it is important to take care while going to public places with co-intensity, pregnant women, immune-sects and elderly people,” Tamil Nadu Health Minister MA. Subramanian told reporters on Wednesday, pointing to the recent bounce in the new Omikron variants in India.

What is a serpentine?

According to the National Cancer Institute, the seropocytrities typically indicate that the immune system has responded to the virus such as the virus, such as the Sars-Cov-2 by creating antibodies.

However, it does not tell us how strong immunity is or how long it will last. For that, further tests are required to assess the exact nature and strength of the immune response.

Interestingly, global studies suggest that the effectiveness of vaccines vary in making antibodies. An analysis of 2023 found that after the third dose of Covid-19 vaccines, the rate of seropocytity was around 67%, and for specific high-risk groups such as solid organs transplant recipients, ceroconvars rate improved after booster shots.

In this context, 97% of Tamil Nadu’s 97% of Seropocritity among the elderly stands out as a assured signal.
