Can too much protein be harmful? 4 side effects you need to know:

1. Weight gain

Eating protein can help you lose weight, but only when consumed within the range. Consuming its excess can lead to weight gain, as it is usually stored as fat. According to a study published in the Clinical Nutrition Journal, the consumption of high total protein between a group of Mediterranean people was associated with significant weight when the protein replaced carbohydrates.

2. Constipation

A high-protein diet does not cause constipation on its own. However, if you do not have enough fiber, you are likely to feel constipation. A study published in the National Institute of Health (NIH) has shown that lack of fiber in children’s diet has increased the risk of constipation. So, be sure to have some fiber with protein.

3. Kidney damage

Another side effect of excessive protein consumption is that it can cause kidney damage. A study by NIH states that high diet protein intake can cause intraglomerular hypertension, resulting in kidney hyperfiltration. Those who have already existing kidney issues take even more about their protein consumption.

4. Heart disease

A NIH study of 42,237 Swedish women between the ages of 30 to 49 showed that a high-protein diet was associated with high risk of death due to cardiovascular causes. Therefore, while protein is good for your health, you should consume it within the range to protect your heart health. Consuming its excess can cause heart related problems and even heart failure.
